Amaçlar
TED Ankara Koleji öğrencileri, İngilizceyi anlama ve dili kullanma düzeylerini, ‘yazma, okuma, dinleme ve konuşma’ becerileri aracılığı ile evrensel değerler ve “Avrupa Dilleri Ortak Çerçeve Programı” (CEFR) standartlarıyla geliştirmeye devam etmektedirler. Aynı zamanda hem dil ve kelime bilgilerini geliştirdikleri İngilizce 1 derslerini, hem de dört dil becerisini yoğun olarak pekiştirdikleri İngilizce 2 derslerini “İçerik Temelli Yabancı Dil Öğretim Modeli”nin prensiplerinden yola çıkarak belli konu başlıkları ve alıştırmalarla işlerler. Lisede okuyacakları orijinal edebi metinlere hazırlık çerçevesinde, alanlarında uzman öğretmenleri eşliğinde, yazılı ve sözlü sunumlarla, okuma, analiz etme ve orijinal metinleri kavrama becerilerini geliştirirler. Her öğrenciye, kendi düzeyi doğrultusunda takip edilebilen çevrimiçi olanaklar da sağlanmaktadır.
ULUSLARARASI GEÇERLİĞİ OLAN SINAVLAR
Okulumuzda her yıl düzenli olarak TOEFL sınavları yürütülmektedir. 5. sınıflarımıza uygulanan TOEFL Primary Step 2 ve 8. sınıflarımıza uygulanan TOEFL Junior sınavlarında öğrencilerimiz seviyelerinin üzerinde başarı göstermektedirler. 8. Sınıflarımız ayrıca International GCSE programının AQA sınavına da katılarak dil becerilerini uluslararası platformlarda kanıtlama imkanı bulmaktadırlar.
Etkinlikler
FORUM
Her yıl 5. Sınıflardan “Forum”a katılmak isteyen öğrencilerden bir ekip oluşturulur. Bu öğrenciler verilen konu hakkında sunum yaparlar. Bugüne kadar ‘sağlıklı bir hayat yaşamak’, ‘şiddet’, ‘okulda ya da hayatın herhangi bir yerinde zorbalık’ ve ‘toplumda ya da okulda sahip olmamız gereken doğru davranış biçimleri’ ile ilgili konularda sunumlar yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmada bir öğretmenin rehberliğinde verilen konu hakkında araştırma yapılır ve öğrenciler sunumlarını hazırlar. Verilen konu her açıdan ele alınır. Bu öğrencilerin arkadaşları, öğretmenleri ve aileleri önünde İngilizceyi akıcı bir şekilde kullanarak sunum yapmaları için büyük bir fırsattır. Bu aktivite öğrencilerin kendilerine güvenmelerini, akıcı bir dil kullanmalarını, iletişim ve yaratıcılık becerilerini geliştirmelerini sağlar.
DÜNYA ÜLKELERİ VE KÜLTÜRLERİ GÜNÜ
“Dünya Ülkeleri ve Kültürleri Günü” ilk olarak 31 Mayıs 2017 Çarşamba günü Kolej Sokağında altıncı sınıfların katılımı ve sunumlarıyla düzenlenmiştir. O tarihten bu yana her yıl 6. Sınıflarımızla yapılmaya devam etmiştir. Bu etkinlikte dünyanın dört bir yanından İngilizceyi resmi dili olarak kabul etmiş 10 ülke yer alır. Öğrenciler yıl boyu bu ülkelerin kültürleri önemli kişi ve tarihi yerleri, coğrafi konumları, yemek, müzik, dans gibi çeşitli konuları araştırarak hazırlanıp ilk önce sınıf arkadaşlarına daha sonra da seçilen gruplar tüm okula sunum gerçekleştirirler. Bu öğrenciler ülkelerine ayrılan stantları poster, afiş, bayrak ve bilgi kartonlarıyla ve yine bu ülkelerden getirilen aksesuar ve süslemelerle dekore ederler. Etkinlik günü sunum yapan öğrenciler yöresel kıyafetler giyerek, o ülkenin popüler şarkı ve müzikleri eşliğinde dans edip etkinliği görsel bir şölene dönüştürürler. Gün içinde okul yöneticileri, öğretmenler, okulun diğer öğrencileri ve veliler stantları gezerek bilgi alırlar, merak ettikleri soruları öğrencilere yöneltirler. Sunum yapan ve stantları ziyaret eden öğrenciler arasında tüm iletişimin İngilizce olarak gerçekleştirildiği etkinlik boyunca öğrenciler İngilizceyi sınıf dışında, farklı bir ortamda etkili bir şekilde kullanma fırsatı yakalarlar. Müzik ve dansların yanı sıra ziyaretçilere ülkelerin mutfaklarından öğrencilerin yaptıkları değişik tatlar ikram edilir. Bu etkinlik sadece renkli, eğlenceli bir faaliyet olmayıp ayrıca bilgilendirici, genel kültür içerikli bir kutlamaya dönüşür. Bu etkinliğimiz 2020-2021 eğitim öğretim yılında pandemi koşulları sebebiyle çevrimiçi olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir.
TED TALK PROGRAMI
TED Ankara Koleji Ortaokulu tarafından her yıl düzenlenmekte olan “TED Talk”, öğrenci merkezli çağdaş bir programdır. TED Talk programı öğrencilerin seçtiği ve aşamalı bir şekilde geliştirebilecekleri evrensel konuların incelendiği ve sunulduğu bir süreçtir. Etkinliğimizin bu yıl yedincisi düzenlenecektir.
7. sınıf öğrencilerimiz yıl boyunca kitaplarında bulunan çok farklı konular ve küresel problemlerle ilgili TED TALKS örnekleri görmektedirler. Buna ek olarak sınıf içi tartışmalar yoluyla öğrencilerin analitik düşünme becerilerinin arttırılması amaçlanmaktadır. Eğitim Öğretim yılının bahar döneminde öğrenciler hazırladıkları projelerini sınıf içi çalışması olarak arkadaşlarına sunarlar. Ders programıyla bağlantılı giden bu çalışmalar araştırma, düşünme ve hazırlanma aşamalarının bir sonucu olarak ortaya çıkar.
İngilizce zümresi tarafından desteklenen bu dört aşamalı proje konu seçimi, planlama/ beyin fırtınası, çeşitli hazırlıklar ve prova aşamalarından geçer. Tüm bu aşamalarda öğrenciler diğer öğrenciler, öğretmenler ve yöneticiler tarafından desteklenir. 2020-2021 Akademik yılında çevrimiçi düzenlenen etkinliğimiz “Gezegenimiz”, “Kadın ve Toplum”, “Yoksulluğa Karşı Teknoloji” ve “Vücut ve Akıl” ana başlıkları altında düzenlenmiştir. Bu çalışma Birleşmiş Milletlerin ACT NOW kampanyası ile birleştirilerek uluslararası farkındalık ve harekete geçmenin önemi vurgulamıştır.
BTEC SAHNE SANATLARI PROGRAMI
Açılımı eğitimsel mükemmellik anlamına gelen ve yurt dışındaki üniversitelere geçişte İngiltere’nin en büyük akreditasyon kurumu olan Edexcel’in denklik kabul ettiği BTEC programları, işletme ve teknolojik eğitimlere yeni bir bakış açısı getiren ve geliştiren eğitim anlayışına sahiptir. BTEC, öğrencilerde yükseköğretime girişte gerekli olan becerileri geliştirmek, onlara hayallerindeki mesleklere ilişkin yeterlikleri kazandırmak ve onları sektörün önde gelen firmaları için tercih edilen bireyler haline getirmeyi hedeflemektedir.
Okulumuz 7. sınıf öğrencileriyle 4. yılını yürütmekte olduğumuz, BTEC Sahne Sanatları Programı ile öğrencilerimiz her sene öğretmenleri eşliğinde bir performans sergilemektedir. Sahneye koyduğu çalışmaların yanı sıra, İngilizce seyir defteri tutarak kişisel gelişimini tanıma ve değerlendirme fırsatı bulmakta, grup çalışmalarına etkin olarak katılma, kendini rahat ifade edebilme, ses tonunu ve vücut dilini etkili kullanma gibi birçok farklı beceriyi kazanmakta ve programı başarıyla tamamlamaktadır.
JMUN
“JMUN” (JUNIOR MODEL UNITED NATIONS) 8. Sınıf öğrencilerimizin birçok kere katılmış oldukları, öğrencilerin yabancı dili en etkili şekilde kullanmalarını sağlayan bir platformdur. Çeşitli okullardan gelen öğrencilerin farklı ülkeleri temsil ederek bir parlamento oluşturduğu, çalışma sistemi olarak Birleşmiş Milletleri model alan bu organizasyon, öğrencilere diğer ülkeleri temsil ederken dünya sorunları ile ilgili farkındalık yaratmayı amaçlamaktadır. Aynı zamanda bu sorunlara dünya dili haline gelmiş İngilizceyi kullanarak çözüm üretme fırsatı yaratmaktadır. Okulumuz öğrencileri bu çalışmalarda her sene yer almaktadır ve JMUNESCO konferanslarına katılmaktadır. Gerek konferans öncesi yapılan çalışmalarda, gerekse konferans süresince göstermiş oldukları özverili çalışmalar ve konferanslarda değişik kategorilerde almış oldukları ödüllerle okulumuzu en iyi şekilde temsil ederek bizi gururlandırmışlardır.
English
Aims
TED Ankara College Middle School follows an English Programme based on the universal values and Common European Framework (CEFR) which help students continue to develop understanding and use of English along with their confidence and proficiency in the four skill areas of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Towards this end, in English 1 classes students are instructed in grammar using an integrated approach incorporating the teaching of grammar structures within the context of engaging topics and activities. In English 2 classes based on a “Content-Based Instruction” model, they practise their 4 language skills. In preparation for working with original literary texts in high school, students spend time with their English teachers reading, analyzing and responding to original texts through written and spoken presentations. Students are also provided with many monitored online opportunities to further their abilities at their own pace.
INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EXAMS
TOEFL exams are regularly administered at our school. Our students have performed well above their level in the TOEFL exams applied to the 5th and 8th grades of our school for several years. Our 5th Grade students take the TOEFL Primary Step II exam and our 8th Grade students take the TOEFL JR Standard exam and receive a certificate with high above average performance. Our 8th graders also have the opportunity to prove their language skills on international platforms by taking the AQA exam which is a part of the International GCSE program.
Activities
FORUM
Every year, students from 5th grade volunteer to take part in the “Forum” activity. Students collaborate together to prepare and present information on a specific topic. To date, they have presented topics such as “living a healthy life together with the vital aspects of behavior like manners in society and school”, “violence” and “bullying in various parts of life including school.” The subject is then explored and written about by each student individually with the guidance and support of the forum mentor. They each choose a different sub topic on the matter so that a wide spectrum of the theme is covered. It is a wonderful chance for these students to do a presentation in English on a main stage in the auditorium with vast audience made up of their fellow students, teachers and parents. It builds their confidence, fluency, interactional and creative skills.
CULTURE CORNER DAY
The first Culture Corner Day, organized by 6th grade students, took place on Wednesday, 31st May 2017. Since then this activity has turned into a traditional event for our 6th Grade students. Groups of students are assigned a country (out of 10 countries) where English is an official language amongst several other official languages. Throughout the school year, these groups of students gather information about the history, geography, famous people, landmarks etc. of that country. First, the students present this information to their classmates and then to the whole school. Students decorate stands with national flags, traditional art, souvenirs, pictures, photographs, and posters with interesting facts. The students are dressed in traditional costumes, play music by artists from the represented country and even perform traditional dances. In addition to this, the participating group members prepare traditional food for the visitors to taste. All day long, principals, teachers, students and parents have the opportunity to visit each stand and learn more about the culture, lifestyle, customs and traditions of their country of interest. During this event, both the students presenting and those visiting the stands, have the chance to practise English in a context outside the classroom. It is not only a rich, colourful, and enjoyable day for the participants, but also an effective and informative event for the visitors. This activity was successfully carried out online during 2020-2021 Academic Year.
TED TALK PROGRAMME
The annually held TED TALK Presentations is a contemporary student-centered presentation event held in TED Ankara College Middle School. The project is based on universal issues from which students may select and develop in progressive stages. This year will mark the 7th anniversary for the event.
In 7th grade, our students are exposed to TED TALKS presentations through their textbook, which covers a wide range of global topics and issues. Moreover, class discussions are conducted to aim at developing students’ critical thinking. Then as part of the second semester class project, students are preparing their own TED TALK presentation, which they will deliver in front of their classmates. Aligned with our lesson content, these presentations are the result of a thorough research, critical thinking and a great deal of preparation.
The TED TALKS Presentations are a four-step project through which students are guided in the processes of topic selection, outlining and brainstorming, and the process of multiple drafting and rehearsals. Last year, students chose a theme among the following: “The Planet We Share”, “Women and Society”, “Technology Against Poverty”, and “Body and Mind”. Those themes are paired with United Nations’ ACT NOW campaign, to raise awareness and highlight the emergency of taking action at an international level.
BTEC PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM
BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) offers vocational qualifications designed for students to gain skills they need either to move on to higher education or to get the chance to start their dream jobs. It brings a new perspective to business and technology education. BTEC programs are accepted by the UK’s largest accrediting agency Edexcel.
With the BTEC Performing Arts Program, which we are conducting with our 7th grade students, our students have the opportunity to perform either face-to-face or Online. In addition to their performance, they have the chance to get to know and evaluate their personal development by keeping a logbook in English, gain many different skills such as actively participating in group work, express themselves comfortably, use tone of voice and body language effectively, thus successfully complete the program.
JMUN
JMUN (JUNIOR MODEL UNITED NATIONS), enabling students to use foreign language in the most effective way, is a platform which our 8th grade students have attended many times. This organization, where students from various schools form a parliament by representing different countries, modeling the United Nations as its working system, aims to raise awareness about global issues while representing other countries. At the same time, it creates the opportunity to find solutions to these problems by using English, which has become the world language. Our students take part in these studies every year and attend JMUNESCO conferences. They have made us proud by representing our school in the best possible way with the outstanding efforts they have made during the conferences and the awards they have received in different categories at the conferences.
